Red Corner

An American lawyer, in China to sell some TV programs to them, gets arrested for murder after a very beautiful, very naked and very dead Chinese woman is found in his hotel room. But these days, one man against the world is not enough, he needs a woman by his side.. and he gets a smart Chinese woman lawyer, who is very beautiful and very clothed (well, initially anyway). Naturally the American government abandons him, leaving him to rely entirely on his lawyer.

Bruce Humphrey: I found this movie to be much better than I expected. Reminiscent of the movie ''Midnight Express'' except that the culture in China is different from that of Turkey. As in Turkey, the government of China is depicted as dictatorial, corrupt and arrogant. A great deal of the atmosphere was created through the clever use of the audience hearing only the translated proceedings through the speakers (as did the main character (played by Richard Gere)) through his translator and earphones. Whenever something said is considered inappropriate, the translated sound is deliberately cut off from our ''earphones''. Whatever the politics is behind it, I found the movie entertaining, thought provoking and very well acted.

Paul van der Westhuizen: Brilliant performance by Richard Gere! One of his best.
