Comments: Wild Things

I don't know why they called it Wild Things.

Sure, we see a couple of alligators and the odd bird, but not often enough to justify the movie title.

Perhaps we are meant to assume that the wild things are the two girls that the story revolves around. But that is just misleading, since I did not find them particularly wild. Maybe I'm just getting jaded...

The plot is particularly twisty. One of the lines in the film is "things are not always what they seem," given as a bit of fatherly advice to one of the girls. To put it mildly, that is an understatement, since 90% of the people - and some scenes - are not what they seem in this film.

Just when you think you understand what is happening, the story takes a sharp turn to the right which throws a whole new perspective on things. This leads to one or two holes in the plot (like the amazing regrowing teeth). Actually, now that I think about it, there were more than one or two holes in the plot. I hate that.

The story revolves around two high school girls who accuse their guidance counsellor of raping them, on seperate occassions. The case goes to trial (after the community presumes him guilty and makes life hell for him), and he is acquitted.

However, a cop smells a rat, and decides to investigate further, against the wishes of his boss. From then on the plot gets very involved, and I can't say more without revealing too much. It is, after all, a crime mystery.

Other critics have lambasted the acting, but I thought it was OK. The media hype around the movie led one to expect some very hot sex scenes. There are some sex shots, but mostly just female breasts and not much else. The ménage à trois was not what it was cracked up to be (maybe the American version was saucier).

Overall, it is not a bad movie, but by no means is it great either. Maybe teenagers will appreciate it more.

Oh, don't walk out when The End comes up - the missing bits are filled in during the final credits.

[Next day]

Having reflected over the movie overnight, I have decided to downgrade my rating. The film sets out to deliberately deceive the viewer. This becomes apparent when you try and match up scenes shown during the final exposé with what happened during the film. Then some things just don't add up.
