The Insider A retelling of the true story of the battle by one of America's top news shows to air an explosive documentary about how the cigarette companies manipulate nicotine in cigarettes. The issue is important because the CEOs of all the American tobacco companies had sworn under oath that they did not believe nicotine to be addictive. A chemist working for the third largest company realised what was going on and was fired for his trouble. His conscience bothered him, and when an opportunity to reveal what he knew came along, he was tempted to take it. Two problems: a non-disclosure agreement he had signed, enforced with financial and legal threats, and the very real physical intimidation he and his family had to endure. The TV network also had to worry about legal action if they aired the program. This may sound very boring but it is an engrossing drama, well worth viewing. Ian Douglas: An important film about an important topic. Not only does it cover the whole issue of how tobacco companies are actually selling soft drugs, the tremendous power which their wealth brings them, how they lie and deceive to stay in business, but also the tremendous courage required to stand up to such power. The problem of doing the right thing for the whole world even at the cost of your own personal life. Kudos to the chemist and producer for what they did. Andrew Simpson (17): Takes a while for this film to really grip you but when it does it is absorbing.
