She gets appointed to look after a one-roomed school in rural China so that the teacher can visit his sick mother. Her bonus is dependent on all her students still being there when the teacher returns. One poor family sends their young son to the city to work, so the teacher, mindful of her bonus, decides to go after him, resulting in the adventure of her life. Ian Douglas: A sweet little story from China. For me, it was enlightening to see how similar life in rural China is to life in rural SA, even down to the one-roomed village school. The heroine wins this year's prize for Most Stubborn, Persistent, Strong-Willed Individual.
