Signs

Unfortunately we can't reveal too much of the plot without spoiling it, but here's the setup. A priest loses his wife in a road accident, turns his back on religion and switches to farming, raising his two kids. His wanna-be-baseball-player brother comes to live with them on the farm. One day, strange designs appear in the cornfields. They initially dismiss it as a prank, but when similiar patterns appear around the world, and the kids see and hear strange things, dad decides that there is something going on. It dawns on them that it really is aliens from outer space who are responsible. The question is, what now? Are they friendly or hostile? How will mankind respond?...

Ian Douglas: There are several things I don't understand about this movie... firstly, why it did so well at the US box office (over 200 M$), and why everyone is raving about it. It is a competent thriller, but not in the class of ''The Sixth Sense''. Shyamalan continues to try to emulate Hitchcock, but ends up with characters and situations which don't make sense. In this case, he has aliens which are intelligent and advanced enough to build interstellar spacecraft and invisible forcefields, yet dumb enough to venture unarmed and unclothed and seemingly alone, onto the planet they are trying to take over. This makes no sense. But that's not all. The humans are just as dumb. After using an axe to jam a door shut, they then venture into the house to check that the aliens are gone... WITHOUT the axe or any other weapon. How dumb is that? And what kind of neighbour, when seeing an injured associate, won't ask ''what happened?'' or ''Can I take you to a doctor?'' ?? and then venture alone and unarmed into a house with an alien inside? These antics belong in Teen Slasher movies, not something with grander pretensions. On the positive side, the performances are pretty good, but they don't make up for all the silliness in the script.
