Atonement

Joined by love. Separated by fear. Saved by hope

Atonement
This highly-regarded movie is an epic tale of love, set against a tragic mistake. The son of a housekeeper and the eldest daughter of the manor are attracted to each other. The younger sister, too young to understand, and also attracted to the man, lies about him, resulting in him going to jail. A few years later, World War II breaks out, and the man joins up. The two women are both nurses. The younger is desperate to undo the harm she did, while the two lovers have come to terms with never being able to marry.

Stella Papamichael quote iconIan McEwan's acclaimed novel Atonement arrives with stately grandeur on the big screen, keeping that same sense of dreamy otherworldliness and unsettling nervous energy. It's a boldly unconventional period melodrama and a stunning showcase for director Joe Wright.

Roger Ebert quote iconThis is one of the year's best films, a certain best picture nominee.

James Berardinelli quote iconOverall, it's a finely crafted motion picture - perhaps not the equal of Wright's Austen adaptation, but strong enough to make it worth seeing for fans of the book and the genre.
