Megan Kakora quote iconA touching, character-driven story about coping with loss told in a surprisingly simple style.
10
BBC
Stella Papamichael quote iconPutting two broken people through the wringer, Danish director Susanne Bier (making her Hollywood debut) gently juices every ounce of emotion from Things We Lost In The Fire. Halle Berry and Benicio Del Toro are more than up to the task, pouring pure soul into this otherwise soapy yarn.
15
Chicago Sunday Times
Roger Ebert quote iconThe movie is an engrossing melodrama, and it has its heart in the right place.

ReelViews
James Berardinelli quote iconThe multiplex has suddenly become a good place for serious, adult drama. Things We Lost in the Fire is emotionally challenging and honest.
18
Rolling Stone
Peter Travers quote iconDel Toro is the movie's force field. This is a performance you will not forget.

ScreenIt
quote iconIt's really just the junkie and widow story, and how the two burned characters try to make a go at it in terms of surviving their personal fires. And while Del Toro shines brightly in his, Berry both burns and gets burned by her character.
