There Will Be Blood

Where there is oil, there is greed.

There Will Be Blood
Set in the early years of the previous century, as the oil boom was taking off, this movie chronicles one man's relentless drive to succeed, and the price he pays. Starting out as a simple silver miner, our hero turns to oil, and builds his business to become a huge empire. Along the way he becomes exceedingly wealthy, but has no personal life to speak off. The more successful he became, the more evil he committed, driving him to seek redemption by whatever means possible. The film won two Oscars and another 40 awards. At the time of writing, it is at number 30 on the IMDB's Top 100 list.

Neil Smith quote iconAnderson's film is also timeless — a sweeping epic in the classic Hollywood tradition that invites comparison with Citizen Kane and Giant. As lofty as its themes are, though, There Will Be Blood finally works best as a thrilling vehicle for its star's fiery majesty and remarkable ability to disappear inside every role he takes on.

Chicago Sunday Times
Roger Ebert quote iconThere Will Be Blood is the kind of film that is easily called great.

ReelViews
James Berardinelli quote iconThere Will Be Blood has the capacity to engage, if not enthrall. Unfortunately, the film's final third is poorly focused and, while there is a clear conclusion, it feels strangely hollow.

Peter Travers quote iconThe first time I saw this beautiful beast of a movie from director-writer Paul Thomas Anderson, I felt gut-punched.
