Invictus

His people needed a leader. He gave them a champion.

Invictus
The story of how Mandela persuaded Francois Pienaar to win the Rugby World cup in 1995. Shortly after the first open elections in 1994, South Africa was still deeply divided. Mandela saw the World Cup, being hosted in South Africa, as an ideal opportunity to bring the different races closer together. The reponisbility for making it happen fell on Springbok captain Francois Pienaar. Mandela's appearance on the pitch in the Number 6 captain's jersey became a defining moment in his presidency.

Roger Ebert quote iconClint Eastwood, a master director, orchestrates all of these notes and has us loving Mandela, proud of Francois and cheering for the plucky Springboks. A great entertainment.

James Berardinelli quote iconThere's no debating that the message of Invictus is worthy, but there are times when its repetition elevates it to a level that's almost sanctimonious.

Tomatometer quote iconDelivered with typically stately precision from director Clint Eastwood, Invictus may not be rousing enough for some viewers, but Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman inhabit their real-life characters with admirable conviction.
