Gnomeo & Juliet

A little adventure goes a lawn way.

Gnomeo & Juliet
Based on Shakespeare's famous tale of forbidden love, this animated film moves the action to two neighbouring gardens, with garden gnomes the stars of the show. Gnomes, as you know, come alive when no one is watching, and although the two garden owners are enemies, and their respective gnomes likewise, a young man and a young woman from across the red/blue colour line fall madly in love. But what chance do they have in such a polarised world? This film is releasing in both 2D and 3D, this is the 2D version.

Box Office
Pete Hammond quote iconPerfectly situated for Valentine's weekend, this wonderful animated tale uses William Shakespeare's inspiration and Elton John's music to tell the story of gnomes that overcome the prejudices of their gardens to forge a bond.
15
eye Weekly
Ofeloa Legaspi quote iconNote the jarring attempts at Shrek–style pop-culture savvy, for example, when all the film needs is more of that ceramic-shattering originality, simplicity and heart that children (and their parents) will easily enjoy.
5
ScreenIt
C. Fuchs quote iconClearly derivative of the Toy Story and Shrek flicks but understanding and emulating what made them so successful, Gnomeo & Juliet might not be terribly original or novel, but it's entertaining enough.

Tomatometer quote iconWhile it has moments of inspiration, Gnomeo and Juliet is often too self-referential for its own good.
