The Descendants

The Descendants
This much-decorated film is set in Hawaii. A water-skiing accident lands mom in a coma. Dad is forced into a role he is not used to, that of actively looking after his two teen daughters. At the same time, he's trying to sell a large family property which would leave the family very wealthy. Things do not look good for mom, and then he learns some disturbing news about her, which sends him and the girls on an island-hopping journey of discovery. The film was nominated for five Oscars, including best film, director, actor and adapted script.

What the Critics say

Cape Argus / The Star
Theresa Smith quote iconUnaffected performances and an exotic location come together to create something that is greater than the sum of its parts. While there are some unpredicatable funny moments, the film concentrates on the messiness that is life.

20
Box Office
Pete Hammond quote iconAwards prospects are through the roof. The Descendants is that rare bird, moving, enlightening, funny and unapologetically human. It's one of the year's best pictures, one to savor and think about.
20
ReelViews
James Berardinelli quote iconThe Descendants delivers what too few recent movies achieve: intellectual stimulation coupled with emotional satisfaction. By default, that makes it one of 2011's best offerings.
18
Rolling Stone
Peter Travers quote iconIf there's something fundamentally wrong with The Descendants, I can't find it. What I see ranks high on the list of the year's best films.
20
ScreenIt
C. Fuchs quote iconWhile it might not work for everyone, I found it quite enjoyable, entertaining and touching.
