Safe
A second-rate cage fighter on the mixed martial arts circuit blows a rigged fight. Wanting to make an example of him, the Russian Mafia murders his family and banishes him from his life forever, leaving him to wander the streets of New York destitute, haunted by guilt, and tormented by the knowledge that he will always be watched, and anyone he develops a relationship with will also be killed. But when he witnesses a frightened twelve-year-old Chinese girl being pursued by the same gangsters who killed his wife, he impulsively jumps to action... and straight into the heart of a deadly high-stakes war.

What the Critics say

Cape Times
Stephen Dalton quote iconThe climax feels wildy implausible and incidental to the plot.
5
Box Office
Kate Erbland quote iconFans of Statham and audiences looking for an action fix will get what they pay for, but the film has scarce crossover appeal for anyone not already on board with its star and genre.
8
ReelViews
James Berardinelli quote iconAs a well-engineered opportunity to enjoy bloody mayhem without feeling too bad about who's on the receiving end, Safe has the combination.
15
Rolling Stone
Peter Travers quote iconStatham, the British Olympic-diver-turned-actor, knows the testosterone overload his audience wants of him, and he delivers big-time.
10
ScreenIt
C. Fuchs quote iconOverall, the film has its share of decent moments, including a twist on the old and quite tired finale of most such action flicks. I just wish there had been more of those and the chance for Statham to do something more than just increase his overall tally of on-screen violent acts.

Rottentomatoes tomatometer
Tomatometer quote iconWhile hard-hitting and violently inventive, Safe ultimately proves too formulaic to set itself apart from the action thriller pack -- including some of its star's better films.
