Pavilion of Women

Pavilion of Women This romantic, historical epic, set in rural Southern China in 1938 is the love story of Madame Wu (Luo Yan), the Chinese wife of an aristocrat, and American missionary doctor Andre (Willem Dafoe).

Their first encounter and subsequent attraction means the pair inevitably break ancient Chinese traditions, and Madame Wu becomes desperate to free herself of her sexual obligations to her husband by arranging a gift of a concubine, ''Chiuming'' (Yi Ding).

However, her son Fengmo develops an obsessive attraction towards his ''second mother'', while Madam Wu is increasingly drawn in by Andre's knowledge and intelligence.
