Across the Universe

All you need is love.

Across the Universe
This Beatles music fest is set back in the 1960s, when a British lad pops over to the USA. He hooks up with an American student and his sister, and he and the girl soon have a thing going on. However the brother gets drafted off to Vietnam, and his ladylove switches to protesting the war, as does the rest of the movie. The plot is mainly an excuse to showcase new interpretations of classic Beatles numbers, which some reviewers liked and others didn't.

5
The Citizen
Leon van Nierop quote iconAcross The Universe is a glorious, colourful, inspiring, provocative mess. It is like going to an over-the-top wedding of somebody you don't know at all and participating in a feast, without boundaries
14
24.com
Jean Barker quote iconAcross the Universe is really just a series of music videos made by the same person and linked by cheesy dialogue.
5
BBC
Stella Papamichael quote iconThe love story really takes second place to a wild carnival of sights and sounds.
10
Chicago Sunday Times
Roger Ebert quote iconHere is a bold, beautiful, visually enchanting musical where we walk into the theater humming the songs.
20
eye Weekly
Jason Anderson quote iconMaybe it's the presence of so many well-loved songs or the sincerity of the singers but something about Across the Universe makes it easier to forgive (and even savour) the many florid excesses.
10
ReelViews
James Berardinelli quote iconI have heard Across the Universe being referred to as this generation's Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and I can't refute the argument.
10
Rolling Stone
Peter Travers quote iconTo call it trippy would be an understatement. Your head might explode. Just don't accuse Taymor of playing it safe.
