Australia

Australia
Baz Luhrmann attempted to create the Australian equivalent of ''Gone With the Wind'', but most critics feel that he did not succeed. Set in the 1940s, an English aristocrat travels to Australia to take over her deceased husband's ranch. In true western style, there is a local bigshot baddie intent on cornering the beef market, and her farm is his next target. She ropes in a local drover to help her drive a herd to market, and they get to know each other well along the way. Throw in a mixed-race adoptee and Japanese bombing campaigns, and all the necessary ingredients are in place for a sweeping epic, which borrows from many other famous movies of the past.

Lisa Human quote iconComes across as a sappy, contrived and overly long piece of nothingness.

The Citizen
Bruce Dennill quote iconFor all that it's set in the city of Darwin, this is a project that completely fails to evolve.

Chicago Sunday Times
Roger Ebert quote iconBaz Luhrmann dreamed of making the Australian ''Gone With the Wind,'' and so he has, with much of that film's lush epic beauty and some of the same awkwardness with a national legacy of racism.

eye Weekly
Jason Anderson quote iconThis is most definitely the kind of big, blustery, pop-mythic epic that Hollywood doesn’t make any more but maybe we should be thankful for that — they’re bloody exhausting.
10
ReelViews
James Berardinelli quote iconA would-be epic on a grand, David Lean-inspired scale, Australia falls far short of intentions and expectations. (One wonders whether rumored studio meddling has anything to do with this.)
13
Rolling Stone
Peter Travers quote iconIf looks were everything, director Baz Luhrmann's epic salute to his native land would be the movie of the year. But, crikey, a padded script bloated with subplots and shameless sentimentality can wear you down.

C. Fuchs quote iconThe sprawling and ambitious pic will likely go down as yet another piece of Australian history, big and costly, but ultimately forgotten by most.
