Winter's Bone

Winter's Bone
Ths multi-award winning movie (and Sundance favourite) is set in the Ozarks backwoods. The main occupation there is making and dealing illegal drugs. When dad gets bust, and skips bail, the sheriff comes to give the family a week's notice before eviction, as the house was surety for the bail. The 17 year daughter, effectively head of the household, resolves to track dad down and save the family. She sets off, going from one relative or contact to the other, and has to deal with the underground code of silence and lack of co-operation, balanced with their commitment to family. The director and cast have generally been well praised for their efforts.

Ray Greene quote iconIf the film’s dramatic engine is in genre, Granik’s unflinchingly environmental direction and the uniformly nuanced and truthful performances she gets from every member of a vast ensemble launches Winter's Bone so far past any notion of formula or precedent that comparison is a futile exercise. This film is a thing all its own. Granik, Lawrence and all their collaborators have created a movie that doesn’t just deserve to be seen. It deserves to endure.

Adam Nayman quote iconThe film’s second half, which elides predictable violent confrontation in favour of more poetic digressions — and features a smart, incredibly even-handed scene with a US Army recruiter — suggests filmmaking smarts.

Peter Travers quote iconEvery once in a rare while a movie gets inside your head and heart, rubbing your emotions raw. The remarkable Winter's Bone is just such a movie. Winter's Bone is unforgettable. It means to shake you, and does.

Tomatometer quote iconBleak, haunting, and yet still somehow hopeful, Winter's Bone is writer-director Debra Granik's best work yet -- and it boasts an incredible, starmaking performance from Jennifer Lawrence.
