Black Swan

Black Swan
The much-nominated and awarded Portman tour-de-force arrives at last. It's one of those rare movies that progressed up the US Top Ten, rather than starting high and sliding down. Set in the world of modern ballet, our virginal heroine is in contention for the lead role in a new production of Swan Lake. The problem is that the director wants the same star to play both White Swan and Black Swan, and he feels she is too innocent for the dark role. She is desperate to succeed, and this drives her to do things she would not normally do, lest the role goes to her sexually experienced rival in the company.

Chicago Sunday Times
Roger Ebert quote iconDarren Aronofsky's Black Swan is a full-bore melodrama, told with passionate intensity, gloriously and darkly absurd.
18
eye Weekly
Jason Anderson quote iconThough Darren Aronofsky’s latest certainly has its moments of freaky grace, Black Swan is a frustratingly inelegant creature on the whole.
5
Rolling Stone
Peter Travers quote iconJust as he did with the fight game in The Wrestler, Aronofsky treats ballet as one of the bleeding arts. And so does his breathtaking star, Natalie Portman, who delivers an all-stops-out performance that will soon be the stuff of legend. Portman's portrait of an artist under siege is unmissable and unforgettable. So is the movie. You won't know what hit you.
