Contraband

What would you hide to protect your family?

Contraband
The plotline's been done to death many times before, so this USA remake of an Icelandic film (with that film's star directing this one) is for Wahlberg to keep his action star creds intact. He plays a retired smuggler, happily married with wife and kids, who gets persuaded to sort out a mess his wife's brother made. That involves him smuggling a stack of fake 100-dollar bills back from Panama, with some cocaine thrown in for good measure. Meanwhile his wife finds herself entertaining the local crime boss, who is intent of making her suffer greatly if her husband fails to deliver. It's up to Mark to make sure everyone gets their just deserts.

What the Critics say

Box Office
Pete Hammon quote iconAlthough the film won't win any points for originality Kormakur invests it with style and momentum. A touch of subtlety wouldn't hurt, but the audience the generically titled Contraband is aiming for won't mind a bit.

ReelViews
James Berardinelli quote iconContraband is the kind of thriller that offers just enough in the way of effective elements to assemble a two-minute trailer. When it comes to a 110-minute feature, however, the sketchiness of the plotting and the director's lack of sure-handedness sink the project.

Rolling Stone
Peter Travers quote iconWahlberg could sleepwalk through this role, and does. See this movie and you'll surely follow his lead.

Tomatometer quote iconIt's more entertaining than your average January action thriller, but that isn't enough to excuse Contraband's lack of originality and unnecessarily convoluted plot.
