Rock of Ages

Nothin' but a good time

Rock of Ages
The director of Hairspray is back with another trip down memory lane. A small town girl meets a city boy on the Sunset Strip while pursuing their Hollywood dreams. Their rock 'n' roll romance is told through the heart-pounding hits of famous bands from the 1980s. The plot is very threadbare, just being there to link the songs, but Tom Cruise gives a powerhouse performance as an ageing rocker and helps lift the film.

What the Critics say

Die Burger
Jeanne Calitz quote iconSingende Tom enigste rede om dié fliek to kyk.

Box Office
Pete Hammond quote iconAimed squarely at a generation who fondly remembers growing up in the rockin' '80s, Shankman hits them with his best shot, evoking the era, the clothes, the music, and the attitude. If it's not the least bit authentic in a down and dirty way, it's at least highly entertaining.

ScreenIt
C. Fuchs quote iconWhile Rock of Ages has some decent moments here and there, we don't care about anyone in it and the songs rarely get better than Glee lite.

Rottentomatoes tomatometer
Tomatometer quote iconIts exuberant silliness is almost enough to make up for its utter inconsequentiality, but Rock of Ages is ultimately too bland and overlong to justify its trip to the big screen.
