The Woman in Black

Do you believe in ghosts?

The Woman in Black
A struggling young lawyer goes to a small village to sort out the estate of a recently-deceased woman. She had lived in a spooky mansion outside the town, and ever since she had died, the children in the village have been suffering mysterious deaths. The lawyer endures much hostility from the villagers, and goes to stay in the ghost house, where he tries to solve the mystery of the dying children, mindful that his own son would be arriving shortly and may become the next victim.

What the Critics say

Cape Times
Todd McCarthy quote iconOld-style horror. The locations and production design are memorable. And the ending is wonderful - perfect, in fact.
15
Box Office
Mark Olsen quote iconA credible suspense story with a surprisingly bold ending, The Woman In Black is a solid step away from Harry Potter for star Daniel Radcliffe—while it, too, is British and fantastical, the tone is sinister, adult and bleak. While it won't likely do franchise numbers, Woman should play well enough to the grab-your-seatmate date-night crowds.
5
Chicago Sunday Times
Roger Ebert quote iconThe movie nevertheless is effective, because director James Watkins knows it isn't a character study. His haunted house is the star.
15
Rolling Stone
Peter Travers quote iconA truly haunting and hypnotic ghost story that earns its chills old-school through artful atmospherics and no switching to the torture porn default position like so many recent horrorshows.
13
ScreenIt
C. Fuchs quote iconthere's enough spooky material present to earn the film a recommendation for those looking for an old-fashioned horror film, hopefully resulting in Hammer Time! coming back to the venerable British studio.

Tomatometer quote iconTraditional to a fault, The Woman in Black foregoes gore for chills -- although it may not provide enough of them for viewers attuned to more modern, high-stakes horror.
