Promised Land
This timely film examines the use of 'fracking' as a means to extract gas, and the impact that this technology is having on the rural towns in America. Since South Africa may soon allow fracking, the film is relevant to us too. We follow a rising star whose job it is to convince the folk in the target town to sell up and allow the corporation to move in and start drilling. However this town throws up some unusual challenges, ranging from the wise old man to the pretty young teacher, to the firebrand environmentalist who arrives to stop the process.

CommentsSteve Butler is sent to a small American town to sign, seal and 'deliver' it to his big corporation in order to 'rape' the land for its gas potential. Steve crosses his 'Rubicon' when he realises the corporation only has money and profit on its mind and not the quaint American way of life that exists in the small town.

Todd McCarthy quote iconPresents environmental concerns in a clear manner but hits some narrative and character bumps in the second half.

ScreenIt
C. Fuchs quote iconAside from that aforementioned twist near the end of the film, I found the offering enjoyable, entertaining and surprisingly fair in terms of presenting believable if opposing sides to a controversial topic. If only the filmmakers had resisted the temptation to give in and turn various shades of gray into definite black and white.
