Gabi Zietsman quote iconIf you're a cinephile and love all genres, which I may add is a small audience, then Colossal is well worth a watch to see how genre crossovers can work, but a mainstream audience may baulk at the weirdness, and some geeks may feel duped when they are expecting a pure supernatural film.
10
ScreenIt
Jim Judy quote iconWhat’s present sort of works, and while there’s plenty of potential here, I just wish it played out in a more entertaining, engaging or interesting fashion. I clearly get the symbolism and metaphors (they’re hard to miss), but the film’s tone is sort of all over the place, and that wishy-washy approach doesn’t do it any favors. At times, it’s quite goofy and doesn’t attempt to be realistic (even within its own far-out parameters), and then segues into some ugly abuse and bullying.

Tomatometer quote iconColossal’s singular strangeness can be disorienting, but viewers who hang on may find that its genre-defying execution -- and Anne Hathaway’s performance -- is well worth the ride.
