Esmeralda is a nurse and happily married -- to five men. When the youngest and most impulsive of her husbands charges her with bigamy as she is about to marry for the sixth time, Esmeralda finds herself in jail.But as the chief inspector interrogates her, the magical force that surrounds her -- a force marked by her innocence and unselfish nature as she describes each husband in detail -- overpowers even her captor and he asks for her hand in marriage.
Realising his mistake, the accusing husband tries to withdraw the charges and serenades her with a mariachi band. Another husband tries to break her out of jail while yet another tries to land in jail so that he may spend a night with her. Esmeralda, even imprisoned, remains a free spirit and helps us realise the limitations of our society and morality.
