'What Becomes of the Broken-Hearted?' is the powerful, much anticipated sequel to the international smash hit 'Once were Warriors'. Temuera Morrison and Rena Owen return to their roles as Jake and Beth Heke.After Beth left him to seek a life beyond the violence and uncertainty, Jake the Muss turned his back on his family. While he found a new woman, Rita, he's still up to his usual tricks in McClutchy's Bar, unaware, as he downs his latest opponent, that his eldest son, Nig is dying in a gang fight. At the funeral, the uncomfortable family reunion sparks a confrontation with second son, Sonny which sets Jake on a downward spiral: He argues with Sonny, is banned from McClutchy's, loses Rita and makes a fool of himself fighting in front of new friend. Ultimately, Jake turns his rage and frustration on himself -- a cowering, shattered figure, the ''foetus-curl of a fallen giant''. Sonny and his friend, Mookie, meet Nig's girl, Tania, as the family farewells Nig.
Beautiful and street-smart, she tells them the awful truth about Nig's death. Although Mookie is reluctant, the trio swear to avenge him. Sonny tries to enlist Jake's aid, but he scorns the whole idea -- anybody who messes with gangs deserve what they get. So Sonny, Tania and Mookie join a rival gang in order to muster their support. But are soon drawn deeper and deeper into the violent vortex of gang life.
When retribution for Nig's death is achieved, Sonny sparks a gang war, forcing the trio on the run. Jake decides to put aside the anger that alienates him from his son, and go to his aid. But tragedy has already struck....
