In Part I, two great dynastic families are locked in a bitter feud. Ruler of Dune, Duke Leto Atreides (William Hurt) faces a challenge to the throne by his arch enemy the brutal and sharp-witted Barron Harkonnen (Ian McNeice). Through an act of devious treachery Baron Harkonnen invades Arrakis, killing Duke Leto and leaving his son Paul (Alec Newman) and wife Jessica (Saskia Reeves) left for dead. However, they manage to survive in the desert alongside the native people of Arrakis -- the Fremen -- and Paul through his natural authority and special powers becomes the Fremen leader.
Academy Award winner Hurt (Broadcast News, One True Thing) leads an international cast, including McNeice (Valmont, A Life Less Ordinary), Academy Award nominee Giancarlo Giannini (Hannibal, Seven Beauties) and Saskia Reeves (Antonia and Jane) in an epic tale based on Frank Herbert's 1965 best-selling classic novel.
