Max Mackendrick (Marcus Graham), a reckless schemer and small time horse trainer, marries Alicia (Tushka Bergen), the image conscious daughter of Barry Coxhead (Bill Hunter), a famous racing personality with a dark past. Max sees this union as his ticket into the elite world of horse racing. Desperate to prove himself, Max makes a fatal error: he swaps a horse, gets caught and is hit with a lifetime ban.When Max's appeal fails and he finally learn's Barry's out to destroy him, he resolves to ditch his loveless marriage and take control of his fate. Lucky for him, Henry (Jason Donovan), a sex addict, has problems of his own. So when Max invites him to assist him with a simple plan to kidnap the wife of the jockey riding the Melbourne Cup favourite, Barry's horse, Golden Run, and force him to lose the race, Henry happily obliges. When a nation stops to watch the Melbourne Cup, the horses are not the only ones sweating... Win or lose, Max will be lucky to get out of this one alive.
