Manuel Jordan (Billy Bob Thornton) has done his time. The parole board has declared him fit for release. But he'd prefer to stay in jail. Manuel killed a young kid named Abner Easley. Now Manuel is out. He is drawn into the life of an inner city community centre run by the relentlessly tough, caring and enigmatic pastor Miles Evans (Morgan Freeman). Miles offers Manuel work in return for a room. Ultimately, Manuel seeks to reconcile his painful past when he pursues a relationship with Adele Easley (Holly Hunter), the older sister of the boy he killed. Yet he finds himself unable to confess his true identity to her, especially as their relationship deepens. Twenty-two years of haunted introspection have taught Manuel a brutal truth: the only one who truly understands the value of a human life... is the one who has taken that life away.
A movie of depth and compassion. It is thought-provoking, subtle and oddly inspiring.
