A flat broke Nat Banyon, sets out in pursuit of a farm job in Wyoming and saves the life of an eccentric old man, Finch, along the way. As a show of gratitude, Finch offers the young man a job painting his decrepit lakeside motel in Deepwater. From the moment he sees her, Nat is distracted by Finch’s beautiful wife, Iris, and it is not long before the two start a passionate affair. Finch continues to treat Nat as a son, but his motives become suspicious when he challenges the newcomer to a boxing match.
