Drum
DRUM tells the story of Henry Nxumalo (Taye Diggs), South Africa's leading investigate reported, exposing the apartheid regime's darkest secrets in the pages of the first magazine aimed at a black readership — DRUM. To report on the appalling conditions of farm workers in the Transvaal, he gets a job on a farm where the conditions are not far short of slavery. He then gets himself arrested and sent to jail to document the treatment of prisoners. And all the while he writes passionately about the lives and struggles of the people of Sophiatown. For the government, the racial and cultural melting pot of Sophiatown became a real threat. DRUM too was a threat, even though from its inception it had been white-owned. Sophiatown could not be allowed to stand.
