In James Franco's darkly satiric directorial debut, Franco (Tristan & Isolde, Spider-Man, Annapolis, TV's ''Freaks and Geeks'') plays Harry Walker, a would-be novelist.It's supposed to be his ticket to glory, away from the job he hates and his mundane home life, but the whole thing is a complete disaster. Fed up, he rents an apartment to try to get some time alone... only to discover that a talking, Hawaiian-shirt clad gorilla is living in his midst.
Despite the added attraction of lice, ''gorilla wet willies'' and flying excrement, ''The Ape'' pushes Harry to fulfill his dreams; but perhaps at the cost of his sanity.
