Peacock John Skillpa is a hardworking bank clerk in tiny Peacock, Nebraska. Though obsessive compulsive and shy to the extent of being antisocial, John leads a relatively peaceful and orderly life, the most difficult of his obstacles being to avoid his friendly neighbours' dinner invitations.

Then there's Emma Skillpa, John's complete opposite. Though she too keeps to herself, Emma is friendly and outgoing, contenting herself with taking care of John. She also happens to be John's other personality.

Unfortunately for John and Emma, their peaceful existence comes to a sudden halt when a caboose comes crashing into their backyard. For the first time, Emma's existence is brought to the attention of Peacock's residents. Though still unaware of her secret connection to John, the town reaches out to her, hoping to bring her out of her shell. Unbeknownst to them though, their kind gesture will be the undoing of John.
