Comments | The material contains psychological, emotional, complex and mature themes presented within a drama context that is based on a true story. It follows a story of a woman who worked at a Planned Parenthood clinic for eight years, where abortions were performed. Themes explore an abortion clinic pretending to reduce the number of abortions whilst their aim is to gain more profit, constitutional values versus Christian values with regard to abortion, anti-abortion campaigns, abortion surgical procedures with close-ups realistic blood details and visual presentation of a fetus shown on a screen monitor being terminated from the mother’s womb, emotional distress and impairment as the result of abortion (s) experienced by those that are affected, concealing full procedural information about abortion to patients for profit gains, one being remorseful and aiming to do the right thing, support from family, praying against abortions, making difficult choices and value of life. Themes carry a strong sense of threat and menace. The nature in which these themes are presented, might be morally; emotionally and psychologically harmful; disturbing and distressing to children under the age of 16 years. The theme of surgical abortions might be psychologically disturbing to younger viewers as the scenes show: women bleeding heavily with blood clots coming out and showing on screen with close-up details. One woman is seen picking blood clots on a shower floor with her hands and disposing them in a toilet after taking abortion pills, she was in pain and the whole bathroom was bloody. The theme of Christian values (against abortion) versus Constitutional values (one having a legal right regarding their reproductive choices) might confuse younger viewers who are still cognitively developing and haven’t established their full identity. Moreover, it might expose growing minds to adult experiences. The intention of the director was to tell a story of a woman who formerly worked at an abortion clinic and the activities that took place behind closed doors in her experience. Although a legal age for abortion in South Africa is 12 years without parental consent (it does not mean that children at that age are mentally ready to handle the maturity and complexity of viewing an emotional and psychological heaviness as well as a physical pain that accompanies pregnancy termination as presented and insensitively handled in the film – considering ). The themes presented in the film are of an intensity that is beyond a tolerance level of a 13 year old. The surgical abortions were treated insensitively with disturbing close-up realistic images of bleeding patients, blood-clots and remains of foetuses. The film does not leave the viewer with a choice to decide, it is anti-abortion and demonizes abortion. Given that, Christian values overrides constitutional values. Furthermore, the clinic had a mission of doubling the number of abortions in order to increase their profit. |
