CommentsThe drama Dominee Tienie explores complex and mature, but mainly positive and inspirational themes of expectations of a preacher’s congregation, death, regret, acceptance, compassion, courage to change, faith, family relationships, homelessness, introspection and self-reflection. It also carries positive messages against hypocrisy, judgement and prejudice; and promotes kindness towards the less-fortunate, community upliftment, compassion and acceptance. Although the complexity and maturity of some of the themes may be confusing to cognitively immature viewers under the age of 10 years, and would require a caregiver for children of 10 to 12 years to explain the context, themes are presented sensitively and with some comedic elements, which mitigates the impact. There is a low to mild sense of threat and menace as contained in the nightmares Tienie experiences because of guilt and stress, where he has the common dream of his teeth falling out. However, the positive messages, and positive resolution with the whole congregation deciding to help the needy people in their community, are inspirational, uplifting and likely to be of benefit to morally developing children of 10 years and older, who would be cognitively mature enough to comprehend it.
